General Counsel for enfinium, Wayne Robertson, talks to us about why Pinsent Masons Vario's Flexible Legal Services was the right solution for him.
enfinium is a specialist operator, and the largest pure-play waste-to-energy business in the U.K. They operate seven waste-to-energy facilities in construction, operation or advanced development, and work to improve the U.K.’s environmental infrastructure.
enfinium had an existing relationship with the firm, with Pinsent Masons acting on a number of large projects for them. At that time, the in-house legal team comprised three lawyers, with one looking to move on during this large project. enfinium needed interim legal support to bridge that gap. General Counsel for enfinium, Wayne Robertson, had a requirement for an experienced, high-quality conversant with the bio mass industry and EPC contracts as soon as possible.
The client came to Pinsent Masons with their problem, with the relationship partner immediately identifying Vario as an ideal solution, with general counsel, Wayne Robertson noting:
In this situation, where you’re looking for the right skill set to hit the ground running very quickly and to work with an external provider who has specialist capability in infrastructure of projects in energy, which were key to this project, Vario was an obvious choice.
Following an initial call, a Vario account executive was able to get an understanding of the specific skills needed. Vario presented a shortlist of four candidates who had relevant experience, submitting their CVs and Vario biographies in under a week. To ensure a quality match, Vario then had a follow-up call to discuss the candidates with the client in more detail. Of the four candidates presented, two were invited to interview, with one candidate being deemed a perfect match for the 6-month assignment.
Speaking on his experience of the Vario Flexible Services matching process, Wayne Robertson commented:
"The process of engaging with Vario was very efficient. This was a really urgent requirement and we needed to get someone in post as quickly as possible. Within two weeks we were able to identify a number of candidates. The whole appointment process was only 2-3 weeks which enabled us to get moving on the project as quickly as possible."
Following the successful placement, the Vario freelance lawyer was kept on with enfinium on a permanent basis.
“The over-all experience was really positive. Getting someone who knew our industry and our business really well, who had worked within a similar business before was hugely beneficial. They were able to get to grips with the key contracts and work streams very quickly.”
Since this placement, enfinium have come to Pinsent Masons Vario again with a requirement for interim legal cover.
Vario is definitely a service that I would work again, particularly for projects like this where you need someone who can get to work quickly with the right skillset and also to work in an integrated way with an outside law firm. It’s hugely beneficial.
As the legal landscape evolves, it is worth questioning whether the “A” in ALSP should still stand for “alternative”
