Multinational law firm Pinsent Masons’ partner Sylvia Tonova and senior associate Chloé De Jager have been appointed as Members of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, as representatives for Bulgaria and South Africa respectively. Both new appointments are for a three-year term set to commence on 1 July 2024.

Sylvia joined Pinsent Masons in March 2023 and co-leads the firm’s international arbitration and investor-state dispute settlement teams. She is a highly experienced international arbitration lawyer and has extensive experience in both international commercial and investment treaty arbitration focussing on complex, high-value disputes, often in the context of high-profile and politically sensitive projects and transactions.

Based in Johannesburg, Chloé is an outgoing ICC Young Arbitration and ADR Forum (YAAF) representative for the Africa Chapter. She specialises in construction law and advises clients in the energy, extractives and infrastructure sectors, focusing on international and domestic arbitrations, and alternative dispute resolution.

Commenting on her appointment, Sylvia said: “This is an incredible honour and privilege for me personally and for the firm. I look forward to supporting the important work of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, which is the premier arbitral institution worldwide for international commercial arbitration. The insights gained from this role will also benefit our clients and colleagues.”

Chloé added: “The ICC International Court of Arbitration is the leading institution globally for international commercial disputes. Our appointments showcase the value our expertise in international arbitration has, and I am proud to represent our South Africa team at a global level.”
