Adventure and intrigue have always been key parts of Ross’ personality. Whether it’s organising a charity walk from Glasgow to Edinburgh, or backpacking through Australia and New Zealand, this trait always seems to shine through. Ross views his role as a Vario flexible consultant through the same lens – in his own words, it was a chance to seek a more dynamic career path and avoid being pigeon-holed into one single area of law. Although his move to freelancing was prompted by the Covid Lockdown, you could be forgiven for thinking that something like this was perhaps an inevitable step.
Ross first sparked an interest in a legal career after reading various books on miscarriages of justice such as Clive Stafford Smith’s “Letters & Writings from Death Row”. Whilst at university, he then also discovered a passion for business management becoming student president for his student union and learning to manage a commercial establishment along the way. During his time overseas after university, he gained his first in-house role, working as part of a project team with a focus on both law and technology.

I have always sought to broaden my skills and experience - Vario is well aligned with this so applying for a role at Vario stood out as an obvious choice for me.
Prior to becoming part of our Flexible Services hub, Ross had never worked in the financial services sector. However, the skills, ideas and experience picked up from previous positions quickly transformed a potentially daunting work environment into an invaluable opportunity to learn.
His current assignment is with a major bank where ironically the General Council leading the team actually started their own role on a secondment basis. So far, he’s been involved in a broad range of work with hands on responsibility and has been able to see projects through from the start right up until the very end.

I've noticed a real increase in my own commercial awareness as a result of working with professionals in the financial services sector. It goes to show that short term work assignments can benefit you at any stage in your career.
Choosing the Vario working model entirely depends an individual’s needs, but for Ross, it was a refreshing change from the more typical roles that he had grown accustomed to. It was an opportunity to broaden his horizons in terms of the work he did, whilst still being able to connect with other people who shared his career interests. Moving forward, Ross is keen to remain involved in legal roles that involve technology and he’s confident that with Vario’s network of contacts and Clients, this is the best place for him.
