A legal agreement between Barnet Council, developer Countryside and housing provider L&Q has been signed to pave the way for a 616-home regeneration of the Dollis Valley housing estate in north London's Chipping Barnet.

The scheme, which has outline planning permission, will be built across five phases and will include the demolition of the existing Council-owned 1960s estate on the site. The first phase, which has been granted detailed planning permission, will see the construction of 108 homes.

The redevelopment will also include new green spaces and community facilities, including a community centre, a nursery and office and retail space. More than 200 of the new homes will be built for affordable rent. These will be delivered by L&Q under Countryside's 'It's Your Choice' scheme, which allows tenants and leaseholders to customise their new homes.

“We know that regeneration is more than re-building decrepit blocks of flats," said Council leader Richard Cornelius in a statement. "With the new homes and mixed community of owner occupied and council tenants we will make sure that educational and other offers are the same for everybody,” he said.

Dollis Valley resident Nigel Eade welcomed the completion of the agreement. "There’s still a huge amount of work to be done and we hope that now we can move forward more residents will get involved to help deliver a scheme that will give our community the homes and environment it needs and deserves,” he said.

Work on the first phase of the scheme is expected to begin in the autumn 2013.
