Westminster City Council has resolved to grant full planning permission for plans for the 163-home redevelopment of the former St John's Wood Royal Horse Artillery Barracks in central London.

Development company St John's Wood Square Limited submitted plans in August for the demolition of existing buildings at the 2.2 hectare site and their replacement with 10 residential buildings ranging from three to seven storeys in height. The new buildings would contain 147 apartments and 16 houses. On-site affordable housing provision of 59 affordable flats has been proposed within the apartment blocks, with a further 41 affordable units offered off-site.

The Council has also resolved to grant listed building consent for the development company's proposals to alter and extend the Grade II-listed riding school within the site to provide health club facilities and a residents lounge.

The scheme also proposes 500 square metres of commercial floor space on the ground floor of two of the residential blocks, and a communal garden square.

The plans were on the agenda for discussion at a meeting of the Council's planning applications committee earlier this week, having been recommended for approval, subject to the agreement of the mayor of London and a section 106 agreement, in a planning officer's report.
