Data regulators in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and the Philippines have signed an agreement to work together on protection of personal data privacy.

The office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) in Hong Kong SAR said in a statement that it will work with the National Privacy Commission of the Philippines to share information which involves potential or ongoing investigations or any other enforcement action, and to provide mutual assistance in joint investigations into cross border personal data incidents or breaches.

Jennifer Wu of Pinsent Masons said: “This shows that there would be further collaboration within Asia Pacific to co-operate on data related matters that is likely to impact more than one jurisdiction.”

The two regulators will also support each other on training and education on current and emerging data protection issues; and identifying suitable organisations from both jurisdictions to participate in a cross‑jurisdictional ‘sandbox’ to test innovative data‑sharing cases.
