However, the figures revealed that the number of affordable homes completed was almost halved compared to the previous year's figures.
The GLA said in a statement that work on 10,092 affordable homes was started in the 2012/13 financial year, which is more than double the 4,017 starts recorded in 2011/12.
It also said that the number of affordable homes completed in 2012/13 was 8,114. This exceeds the target of 7,562 but is almost half the number of completions recorded in 2011/12 which was 16,173.
“Increasing the supply of affordable homes in London is intrinsically linked to the future economic growth of the capital," said Mayor of London Boris Johnson. "Without homes to live in the hard-working Londoners who keep this city thriving will be forced to move elsewhere taking with them their energy and drive."
"While there is a growing momentum behind affordable housing delivery, we need to redouble our efforts, which is why I will continue to call on Government to give London all the tools and funding it needs to increase the supply of affordable homes in the capital,” Johnson said.
The GLA published figures in November last year showing that work had commenced on only 425 affordable houses in the first half of the 2012/13 financial year. 9667 of the starts in the full year have therefore been made since September 2012.
The GLA said it would publish a detailed breakdown of all affordable housing starts and completions by borough and tenure by the early summer.
