A planning application has been submitted for a new campus by Imperial College London (ICL). The proposed scheme includes a new academic campus, commercial buildings and new residential space surrounding a new London Square.

The application for the proposed development has been submitted to Hammersmith and Fulham Council and the scheme would be built on ICL's west London Woodlands campus, formerly the BBC's Wood Lane studios.  ICL bought the seven acre site from the BBC for £28 million.

ICL has submitted a masterplan for the 946,147 square feet development, along with a detailed application for the second phase of the development.  The first phase of the development is due to be completed in August and includes four studio blocks and research facilities.

"Imperial’s presence in the area along with research and development teams from the BBC creates a strong foundation for high-tech media and creative industries," the White City Opportunity Area Planning Framework states.

The Framework is used to guide development within the Opportunity Area and is taken into account in determining planning applications.

The development of the site would support the growing demand for education facilities and would support a "significant rising need" for post graduate accommodation, according to ICL.

The masterplan for the development includes new shops, a pharmacy and a nursery and is expected to be completed in different phases over the next ten years. It is hoped that the new campus will become a major centre for science, technology, business and medical education, ICL said.
