Redrow selected to deliver Hendon police centre regeneration scheme

The Greater London Authority (GLA) has selected developer Redrow as its preferred bidder to purchase land and carry out a 1,650-home regeneration of the Metropolitan Police Peel Centre site in north London's Hendon, Mayor of London Boris Johnson has announced.

Redrow will redevelop land not required for policing operational needs to create a new neighbourhood in Colindale with homes, cycle routes, shops, a primary school and nursery and green space. The developer will work with Barnet Council to develop its plans further and undertake a public consultation before a planning application is submitted in the first half of 2014.

The 22 hectare site is the first to be procured through the London Development Panel which the Mayor set up to speed up the release of public land to accelerate the delivery of housing in the capital and boost the economy. It has been identified in the London Borough of Barnet's area action plan for Colindale as an essential site for the regeneration of the area.

The police training centre has occupied the site since 1934 but only a fifth of it is now in use. A new training and operational centre will be created on a smaller part of the site which is being retained by the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime.

“This new deal is great news for all involved," said Deputy Mayor for policing and crime Stephen Greenlagh in a statement. "Not only will it create a thriving new neighbourhood complete with jobs, homes, schools and parks but it will also secure the future of Hendon’s iconic Peel Centre as one of the best police training grounds in the world."

"This deal is a key plank of our plan to slim down and modernise the Met estate whilst allowing us to reinvest the sale proceeds into frontline policing.  Savings from the redevelopment of Hendon will help us keep officer numbers high and deliver police buildings and infrastructure that are fit for the twenty-first century,” Greenlagh said.
