Southwark, British Land and King's College enter agreement for Harmsworth Quays scheme

Plans for a major new university campus in London's Canada Water are set to get underway following the London Borough of Southwark, Developer British Land and King's College entering into a co-operation agreement to work together on a masterplan for the scheme.

The planned 300,000 square feet campus would accommodate up to 2,000 students. The site is identified as having the potential for a university campus in the Borough's revised Area Action Plan for Canada Water.

The Council's cabinet member for regeneration and corporate strategy said in a report (6-page / 77KB PDF) on the agreement that there would also "undoubtedly" be residential development on the site. "It is our expectation that this will include hundreds of new council homes as part of our pledge to deliver 11,000 new council homes," she said.

The report said that King's College had initially proposed to build student accommodation on the adjoining Mulberry Business Park site, for which it was granted planning consent earlier this year. However, "Kings quickly identified the unique opportunity Canada Water afforded it to create a new major campus for the University," the report said.

The Council said it expects a full commercial development agreement for the scheme to be signed next year.
